How can I stop the white smoke on my Sears mower after belt change?

I just replaced the deck belt (part 144200) on my mower (Sears model 197271042). I followed the diagram on the mower deck. When I started the mower and engaged the deck belt, white smoke poured out. I shut it off and the belt was "frayed" around the top and bottom edges equally all the way around the belt. I took the deck off the mower and took the belt off to check the pulleys. All seem to spin okay. What is causing the white smoke?

I would think that if the smoke is coming from the belt which you say is new, then it's slipping. This could be due to lack of tension (spring missing?). Alternatively, are you sure you have routed the belt correctly? Some mower decks have guide pins to control the belt when the blade is disengaged and it can be easy to get the belt on the wrong side. Also you could check the pulleys rotate freely with side load on them.

Let it burn off through normal use. It will clear after five minutes
