I bought the washer about 4yrs ago - it has intermittently put brown rust type marks on my clothing - we've has an engineer who says not washer fault, water company confirmed no contamination in the water - any ideas?

If its noisy when spinning the bearing have gone .
They then start to rust , leading to rust marks on your clothes .

check between the door gasket FOLDS for any metal if its been there a LONG time will have gone rusty check the filter pot for coins,hairgrips, etc
(SOME FILTERS are NOT at the front of machine they are HIDDEN out of site.)
(HINT)
try the big hose that come's out the bottom of the outer drum for FILTER
