Toyota Avensis warning light?

Hi, I have a 2003 Avensis (03 plate) and one of the dash warning lights came on a few days ago, and is still on. It's the one showing an orange engine block, on the right side of the rev counter. The local Toyota dealers say I need a new engine management system and catalytic converter, and have quoted £1900! Is there any way round this, and what will happen if I just ignore it? Any advice will be much appreciated.

The fault is the lambda sensors

Why does the engine sound different and the car is jerking when driving it.

Hi, I've just had this problem too - the VSC and TRC off lights are on with the engine management one (looking like the sump of an engine) which appeared a week after my 40k service!!

The solution? They need to change the Catalytic converter and Toyota have instructed that if they change this, they must fit a new engine too!

MINE IS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY so will cost me nothing - I'm just a bit annoyed that they're quoting 6 weeks for the engine to arrive (perhaps the tsunami has hindered them?) and I have to have a *rappy Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra for the duration - but it's at their cost.

My car is a 56 plate. If yours is as young then you shouldn't be paying so much - but you haven't mentioned the 3 warning lights - it's a new fault they're keeping quiet as there are 3 others in the shop for the same thing at the moment.

I hope this helps you but if anyone has the 3 warning lights up, don't leave it if your warranty is due to expire!!!

I also experience the same problem. The car electrician has found that the catalytic converter has to be changed. Once we reset the engine the amber light goes off. So my question is, once the amber light goes off does it impact the mpg even though we haven't changed the catalytic converter.

Before I change the catalytic converter I would like to try out what "jp" (Feb 2011) has mentioned.

Thanks.

I have a avensis 2003. The yellow dashboad ligt has come on. The dealer said it will cost 280 for a faulty o2 sensor or £1500 if I need to replace sensor. The car hass passes mot

first of all avoid main dealers!! check ur 4 plugs and air filter first! then try ur airflow meter swop it wit a second hand one its simple only 2 screws on the side of air box! then try changing both lamda sensors check scrap yards for these! if all dat fails then try changing the cat!

I have the Toyato Avensis 2003. The local dealer asked me to change a enigne becuase they said it was was broken. I asked them to made a full service and MOT for me as well. It cost me £2778. After one month, the malfuction light on. I went to the dealer to ask what is the problem. They told me my catalytic converter failed. I need to change it with a update ECU. The price would be £1500. I also found that after I change the engine, I spend more pertrol thant before. Any one know what should I do?

I have just been quoted £1500 for a new engine management system and cat. The car is on its second engine so I won't be buying Toyota again

Andrew, February 2010
I have a 53 avensis which has the warning light showing since august 09.

Been quoted £400 for new cat labour and vat,

Car still doing 37 MPG.

Passed MOT in Nov 09 with no faults just 1 advisory (leaky shocker) not bad for 112k car.

My advice is '' Dont go to dealers ''

I have just had the same thing with the Toyota avensis and have been quoted £700+ I have no choice but to do it as they will not pass it on the MOT because of the emission's and that's the only reason

I have a 04 Toyota avensis from new a heap of junk, three engines have gone into it.... and the engine management light is on again..th V Tech engines a manufactured in Spain and assembled in the UK.. there was a recall on them.. you have to change the oil at 9000..i wont be buying a toyota gain i think the Honda or Skoda..far better car..hope all works out for you..

Genius, July 2009
I have a similar problem. Diagnised as faulty catalytic. The local garage have quoted approx in the region of £1K with genuine parts. the rear and the front cat.
I am still running the car without the change and have noticed that the mpg have gone down from 42 to 31 . I feel like the engine is running at above ideal speed .

If you have received any comments or replies please share it with me, as i as as keen to know as you are.
