If it's only 6 months old then tell your retailer (NOT the Manufacturer) that you want it repaired under the 12 month warranty. If they can't repair it the retailer is required to replace it with something similar.
It is always possible the the cause of the smoke has been smouldering fluff and lint which can accumulate in a dryer, but a 6 month old machine should not have been contaminated to that extent--provided you have been regularly clearing the fluff from the filter screen.
Dont use the machine until it has been checked out. Smouldering fluff fires tend to singe wires.
Other possible faults such as belt drive slipping or burnt out electric motor should not be happening to such a new machine
