Is my hard drive dead?

I'm trying to format my hard drive & re-install windows98. When I attempt to go into fdisk, a message appears on the screen - 'no fixed disk present'. Can someone please tell me what this means - is my hard drive dead?

i would suggest upgrading your pc if you are still running windows 98. hope you dont take offence to this its just it sounds quite old. have you tried a different hard drive? if so does that work? have you tried going into bios and running a auto-detect hard disk? open up the command prompt and type format c:
if it finds the hard-drive it will ask you to continue. hope some of this helps if not repost and i will try and answer
