My key fob doesn't work. The central locking works when key inserted into lock. If key left out ignition for few seconds I press the lock button and the speedo pin moves and followed by short clicking noise. Any ideas what's wrong would b grateful.

MY 406 locks went awfual after some snow: very intermittent remote locking and pretty dodgy with the key. I thought that taking the locks out and dousing them with oil would sort it all out: Wrong! The key worked fine but still no remote. Tried all the resetting tricks (didn't go as far as disconnecting the battery, I admit), changed the battery in the key but to no avail. Then the remote key was lost for a fortnight, and when it was found again it worked perfectly. So try chucking the key down the back of the sofa for a fortnight and using the spare. Failing that, stop trying to push the remote button for a while.

The last one defo works for my 2002 2.0HDi, ignition on, press and hold lock button within 10 secs for at least 30 secs. hey presto, all good.

Thank you for this advise. My spare key would not work originally but now it does perfectly. Saved me £140!

This worked for me:
- disconnect battery for 2 mins,
- put key into second position (all electronics on),
- press shortly once,
- press shortly twice,
- turn off and take key out...
and voila!
Thanks guys for the inspiration.

I just disconnected the battery and then reconnected. After this both keys worked as normal. Perhaps I was just lucky.

My two-button remote key fob for a 2000 Peugeot 406 stopped working remotely (but worked fine in the locks). The manual did not help much, because it said "hold down button A until the indicator light B stops flashing. release the button, the indicator light is lit continuously". It wasn't. It took about two minutes for light B to stop flashing, but then it was off (not lit continuously).

Instead, I pressed both buttons down at the same time. Within thirty seconds light B was indeed lit continuously. I then took the key near to the car and pressed button A twice, switched on the ignition for five seconds, turned it off again, and hey presto -- remote works again.

I tried the above (except disconnecting the battery) and to no avail. Any other ideas?

Disconnect batt for one min.

Reconnect and enter car with key.

You will need to program both keys at the same time. (or one twice if you only have one)

Insert key in ingnition and turn on (do not start the engine)

Within 10 seconds press the large button on the key in the ignition

then press the large button on the second key.

If only one key use that one twice.

Then turn off the ignition.

Both plip keys should now work.

My 407SW fobs stopped and the dealer wanted £117 to replace one, with no guarantee it would work. Followed advice to disconnect and then reconnect battery, then followed handbook reprogamme procedure - now works fine.. Thank God for the Internet..

Only one Fob works at any one time though.. I'll manage..

Ive tried every key press sequence i can find on the internet and in peugeot manuals, It was disconnecting the battery that started the problem, everything was fine until then, If the car is left for a few minutes, and then the key fob button is pressed, the speedo and tacho needles flicker, and a click can be heard from the BSI under the dash, so 'i think that the car is receiving a signal, any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi I have had a similar problem with a Peugeot 407. I tried this but did not work, took the car to my dealer who tried various things to recode then told me £117.00 for new fob and £78.00 for second key if bought together. They assume both fobs failed at same time which I think is totally illogical. On getting home I disconnected and re connected the battery and recoded keys both now work fine.
