What could be wrong with my automatic transmission if it will drive in reverse but when put in drive it will not shift into any other drive gear but drive gear 3. I shift it down to D1 and D2 and even Drive (D). So I can go in reverse and I can go 60 MPH without automatic shifting but the RPMs get up to 5000.

What years the car?
What,s showing next to the gear lever is it p-r-n-d-2-1 or
p-r-n-d-3-2-1?
It sounds like the cars in default,with whats called a soft code.
The gearbox is electronically controlled and the computer has picked up a fault,either a solenoid out of resistance or its picked up a slip from the gearbox.
