If there is no suction at the hose with the handle in the upright position, then most likely the ubend assembly is missing. If you mean that the vacuum cleaner is not picking up hair and lint like it did when it was new, check for blockages in the lower hose, the cleanout area and of course empty the dirt container. If none of these things works, you might consider replacing the clutch. The belts on the clutch are likely to be stretched after a few years and so when you attempt to use the vac on carpet, the brush roller stops and the belts slip. This is a medium level (meaning not as easy as most vacuum belt replacements) repair but perfectly do-able. There are some great DIY kits available that come with instructions and everything.
