How to fix my Fiesta MK4 1998 Encore door lock?

Have been having problems for a while but only recently it has got a lot worse.
I can lock/unlock the door sometimes, at other times when the door is locked it will not open from the inside or outside, have removed the locking mechanism many times to reset as a temporary solution.

Also at other times when I can lock the door, if I test the handle to see if the door is locked it won't unlock afterwards, which means removing the lock again.

Any ideas?

Hi Daz, sounds like the tension spring has fallen off that keeps the lever in the lock assy from dropping down, when this happens the lock will give the symptoms you describe contact me on nige110162@hotmail.co.uk and I'll mail you a picture of where this spring should go and how to get around it!!
