sorry should have said, start with 3 litres of engine oil. wait a few moments and check dipstick, the oil level should be in between the two notches on dipstick, for gear oil, its 1.8 ltrs.

it depends whether your changing the oil filter aswell
just put in four litres and let the van run for about a minute, then keep checking the dipstick as you top up bit by bit
