galaxy 2.8 v6 auto?

i have a 1997 R reg galaxy. Sometimes it will not kick-down, when this happens it sets off in 3rd & will not drop into top. How do you check the level as i can see no dip-stick, what oil does it take, & is the box a MTX75?
