starter isn't engaging with flywheel?

I was mowing my lawn heard a bang sort of sound as mower went dead,Then when I tried starting heard a whining sort of sound. I looked athe the starter area and see that the teeth aren't meeting the teeth of the flywheel (I think that's what that is ?)
What might my problem be ? It's a snapper rear engine rider 12 hp

The starter drive may have given out.
If it's a Briggs engine they make two styles of starter drives.
One is held on with a roll pin, the other has a C-clip as a retainer on the end of the shaft. Rebuild kits are available from any Briggs dealer, and come with instructions. Neither is too difficult to rebuild, but the C-clip can be a.......... Well challange.....
