Despite checking my tyre pressures regularly one of my back tyres loses lots of pressure. I checked my tyres and ensured that 26 PSI was in but when I checked 8 days later only 16 PSI remained.

I suspect it may be a problem with the valve as the tyre is fairly new and seems OK

Please advise of the problem and the approx cost of repair

Only answer is to take it to a tyre fitter and let them find the slow leak, might be a nail in the tread or anything, but as you say it a newish tyre. Running round with it half flat while you think about it will only ruin it and it will cost you more for a new one.
