Cooling System on 1997 Chevy Lumina?

I'm following the radiator hose from the radiator but it seems to lead places other than the thermostat.
I can't find the thermostat. I'm not extremely experienced but I've changed several thermostats in my time.
Please help... feelin' stupid... Thanks!
