Pull cord and power unit not talking!?

Wonder if anyone can help. I have a Triton T80i shower, don't know how old it is as I have recently moved into the property. This morning the pull cord (which has been dodgy turning off - sometimes have to pull it several times) behaved like a dream and pulled on however the shower unit itself was showing no power, I did however have water (very cold water!). Before I spend oddles of cash calling an electrician out is there anything that I can do to check if it is something simple. I am thinking the problem may lie with the cord but I could be way off here.
Any help gratefully received as I hate having a cold shower!
Thanks

Your problem would be best solved "changing the pull cord switch ". DONT try if you are not sure, or fully competent.
Make sure the power to the particular shower circuit is off - if attempting DIY.
(You should possess some testing "neon tester" , & appropriate screwdrivers, etc, also 1st checked if this unit is an its appropriate fuse at the consumer unit - and fuse not tripped ?? ) - If in doubt consult an electrician/ or a competent diy relative ???
