Toyota Avensis Engine Warning Light?

I have a 2000 Avensis (V Reg) and one of the dash warning lights is lit, and is still on. It's the one showing an orange engine block, the manul syays to get it checked by Toyota as it could be part of the electrical system. I fear it maybe very expensive and I cant afford a new engine has anyone got advice on this , and what will happen if I just ignore it? Any hlep will be much appreciated.

After replacing the cat with a genuine Toyota part from a lower mileage car (scrap cars) the light still came on but still reading P0420 with spot on emissions test. Finally replaced the down stream sensor and problem solved. (I did get "rotten egg" smell so cat was on its way out at 95,000 miles.

2004 Toyota Corolla Verso 1.8vvti 94k Have the same eng men light with tcs &vsc light on (because they are connect to E.M). Emissions check says all is perfect but computer say cat weak. Cleaned 02 sensor but still happens. Running on super unleaded. Performance great. It seems to happen when the fuel tank read just above half, yet no significant suck when I undo the filler cap. Will keep monitoring the fuel level to see if it the vent cap as some US sights say.

My engine warning light came on a month after I purchased my 03 Yoyota Avensis took it to dealer I was told it would cost £1500 to put it right.
Never did a thing with it just ignored it. that was 7 years ago the car runs as well now as did 7 years ago

I have an Avensis 03 tourer, engine warning light came on. took to garage who told me I needed new 02 sensors and cat (had done 80k). Got these changed (~£600) and all fine and dandy. 2k miles later up popped warning light again. Appears this time it mean cat not working efficently. Seems I have been doing too many short trips and very few blasts along the motorways, so you get a residual build up. garge suggested Cataclean and a good run. Presto!

Note to self... take car for a 10mile blast weekly!

Sometime the EML comes on from a CAT sensor. The type of fuel we use makes a difference because of the design and sensitivity of the sensor. I filled up my Avensis 1.6 VVTi from Shell, BP & Asda. The management light came up after few miles of driving. I reset the light and tried fuel from Esso, Morrisons and Sainsburys. No light came up after a long time. You can try it and check. I am always using fuel from Esso now but make sure before you fill up you use up the fuel as much as you can and fill the tank up. If you don't have a OBD to reset the light take off the battery positive terminal leave it for 2 hours and it will reset. Doesn't harm you to give it a try.

i also have the same. Mine is an avensis 2006 model T4 2.0l. However, it is consuming oil at the rate of 1.5l per 500 miles. Could some one tell me what I should do?Do i get another engine?

The engine light came on on my 99 plate 1.8 GLS Avensis at about 80,000 miles and then it failed its MOT on emissions. Local garage werent entirely sure whether it was thre CAT or the Lambda sensor., but suspected the Lambda. cost about £300 to get fixed. Car now has 160,000+ miles on the clock. Toyotas are fab!

i have o2 1.8 vvti , i disconnected the battery for 5 secs reconnected and put new air filter in . sorted and no trouble since. my car as 86000 on the clock and i change the oil at national tyres (castrol edge 5-30) they are the only ones useing this oil (£34) every 6 months and the car as been great.

I have 1.8 Toyota Avensis Vermont.
Both engine block light and ABS light on constant
Engine block light went off after being diagnosed via computer but came on again a couple of hours later.
The ABS light on and cannot detect exact fault - showing defective ABS Pump now thats an expensive job.
Would disconnecting battery for period give temporary solution ? Want to get this through NCT Irish equivilant of MOT on this Thurs.

I've got an 05 Avensis Estate with 2.0 turbo diesel. The engine warning light came on in Feb, in Franch after filling up at a hypermarket. There's no drop in performance or economy. Any ideas?

I have a Y reg Toyota Avensis 2l vvti and the engine light came on Thursday evening. I read the posts above and was fairly happy that it would last until Monday as I had only 21 miles to drive between then and getting to the garage.
Come Saturday morning, the car would not turn over and had to be bump/push-started and taken for a lengthy drive to get some charge to the battery. Car is currently having battery and alternator checked and I'm awaiting the outcome.
Will feedback to this post when I know more, but suggest (as Rich did) that this not be ignored.

Hi Guy's
I have a Y reg 1.8 vvti and like many of you the Engine Management light comes on but the car continues to run perfectly.
I have recently had the exhaust & CAT replaced and suspect it is a sensor.
Short sharp cure - Disconect the battery for 10 seconds or so and the light goes out!
May come on again in a few weeks but a much cheaper solution than the Toyota Dealer although admitedly not for the long term

got the 52 plate 1.8 vvti and mine came on about 1 year ago. took it to kwik fit twice they checked it with the computer and both times they couldnt find fault with it. the light would go off, but come back on the next day. been driving it the same way and there no drop in performance or fuel consumption. only prob now im trying to sell it whos going to buy a car with the engine light on.

I have the same problem with a 2003 toyota avensis and am not sure how to sort it out.

john, September 2010
dont worry keep on driving ignore the light

javed, May 2010
I have a 2001 avensis 1.8. I bought it with 45000 miles on the clock less than 2 yrs ago. Looked into the paper work that came with it and found the previous owner had already replaced the gear box and clutch. It is impossible to pull away fast without terrible juddering. At 60000 I had to replace the engine. It would appear that the oil lights commonly don't work so check regularly as they burn more oil than any other car I have owned, and most of my cars have been comparitvely old bangers.

Now I have the same engine check light problem. So the real question is where did toyota get their reputation from?

Engine Management light comes on and lose power, have to stop the car. Restart and the light is off and normal service resumed. Usually happens when trying to reach speed quickly and when car temp is low. Any ideas why its doing this.

Imtiaz, November 2009
Hi,this sounds like the engine ecu unit or the lumbar senser is faulty.
Firstly,i would change the lumber senser, costing around £40.
Hope this is useful

john, May 2009
Have the same problem, Engine management lights up but goes off after about 30 mins. I will just ignore and keep a close watch on the oil levels.

John C, February 2009
I have an Avensis 2.0 automatic X reg. I have had the same problem for many months now, with no lack of performance. It comes and goes(might be on for a day then go off for some weeks). Took it to my local Toyota dealer when the light came on the other day. Their responce was it might be the solenoid OR the ecu unit (£300 or £940) respectivley. They had not come across this problem in the last 7 years (don't believe them) and had to contact Toyota direct for information. The could not say which was causing the engine light but it could be solved with the £940 fix + 1 hours labour. Surprize surprize. I don't think so! Check on the Toyota forums there are numourous solutions that Toyota offer, all expensive and the problems return. If you don't want to pay then unfortunatly you will either have to live with it or get rid. Like I say I have this intermittant light on for well over a year with no problems. Toyotas are reliable overall but all manufactures have problems and they use customer feed back to help them develop future vehicles. Your part of their development.

MIGGY55, January 2009
I have the same problem and it has been there for the past 2yrs. I took the car to a Toyota dealer and the light went off temp. and it is back again. I have now been told by a mechanic that it could be a defect in the sensor. I do not think Toyota UK has the answer.
You are right it is an expensive job.

Don Liyanage, December 2008
hi,
Its not very expensive and you don't need to go to a dealer. Find a mechanic that can have it check through a computer. It only costs about 50£. Its because of not using quality fuel. Another way out could be to use the most expensive petrol or diesel and it will go off itself. hope it works.

mohammad, October 2008
If you ignore it it will DIE,have you changed the oil and filter recently?had a service?any maintenance at all?if not get an oil and filter/air filter change at a fast fit garage first,go back to basics, manuals ALWAYS tell you to refer to dealer,it's not rocket science it is just regular maintenance most of the time.
