the power head motor ran intermittently, then stopped completely.
i checked, and there is power to the connetcion going into the powerhead.
i took the cover off and checked for loose connections, but found none.

I too had the same problem,so I bought one off ebay the problem was I live in the UK so voltage is 240v where as the replacement motor was 110v.It still worked but it's going through belts at a very fast rate. You can actually smell the belt burning. Is there a way I can downgrade the voltage that the actual vacuum uses (240v) to 110v for the power head motor?

You probably need to replace the motor. This is a standard powerhead motor. You can find it at any local vacuum repair shop and it is easy to replace.
