bmw 318 hard to start?

I have a 1995 bmw 318 and its hard to start in the mornings, I recently put a new exhaust on it and since then thers is an unusual burning smell from it. It almost feels like when you are starting it that its not getting any petrol but then when it starts it revs up and down for a while and then goes alright.
has anyone come accross this before???

Thanks Rich, sorry I didnt say what I meant clearly, The car was always hard to start even before I put the new exhaust on it. The burning smell I think was just the wax or some of the paint burning off the new exhaust when it heated up after it was installed. I think it is possible that there is an air leak in it because it had one about 6 months ago but it was on a pipe and I replaced the pipe and it went fine for a while. I went round the enginebay one day spraying the various parts with easy start to see if the engine would rev up but it didnt, having said that, it was warm at the time so just when you say it could of sealed the leak when it warmed up, ill do it again when the engine is cold and see how it goes. I thought the burning smell was the cat but I got the emmissions checked the other day and the cat is fine so ill have to look elsewhere. I was wondering do they give trouble with sensors or anything??

Sounds like you have an air leak,it only started when you put the exhaust on,when it warms up it seals the leak,GO BACK and refit the exhaust again carefully, don't go looking for faults elsewhere if the fault has only started since you changed things(replaced exhaust).Burning smell!!not good, didn't smell before did it?
