IS MY STARTER MOTOR BROKEN??

Just replaced alternator on vauxhall astra 1.7 T.D but i dont now if my starter motor is not working correctly or if i have a power loss somewhere. The car wont start as if there's not enough power in the battery but i'v tried 3 or 4 batteries but same results. Alternater is working and charging ok. Can you help??

it sounds you have a lazy starter motor i had the same problem and got a recon starter now im back on road.

defo your starter motor. If the bushes each end of the starter are worn it allows the com to be "sloppy" and rub the coil fields thus slowing down the cranking speed and power of the starter and in turn the engine. fit a new or recon unit. done hundreds of them.

Forget the BATTERIES,forget the ALTERNATOR,buy a recon starter with solenoid, clean all connections and fit it,unless you want to spend your life underneath the damned thing,it's your starter,4 batteries can't be wrong can they??

Thanks for the answer but this has already been done i'v cleaned the wheel that the copper bushes run on. the starter motor will only revolve when I use a battery that just been taken off charge. the battery seems to have around 12 volts going through it after 3 or 4 attempts of starting.

A starter motor take lots of current - ever so much. It's controlled by a big solenoid-operated switch usually on top of the motor itself. If any of the connections are dirty or perhaps a little loose the voltage presented at the motor itself may be low - like having a flattish battery. Before changing the starter motor consider cleaning up the connections in the high current (fat wire) circuit to the solenoid. Battery terminals too.
