What has gone wrong with my electric window?

VW passat TDi - the front elctric window stopped halfway up today. Motor sounds like still working but nothing happening. Managed to get it shut, but now not working at all. Has something snapped & is it expensive to fix?

My Golf has had this problem twice. Window wind mechanism costs about £47 + VAT. Remove inner door panel to gain access to steel plate carrying winding mechanism. Remove two large black access plugs and loosen clamps for the glass. Pull up glass and tape to top of door to stop it falling down. Remove steel plate and disconnect motor etc.

Fit new mechanism plate, fit motor, clamp glass, test, fit inner panel. The mechanism has pulleys, cables, runners and clamps for the window and also carries the door speaker - will have to drill out the rivets for the speaker and pop-rivet or bolt speaker onto new window mecanism.

Fiddly job may take 90 mins or even all day if don't know how to proceed. A car lock specialist will charge £100 - £150 to do it for you including parts.

Fault will proably be broken nylon brackets or winding cable - probably not possible to repair mechanism - best get spare part. Specify Make, Model, Year, Passenger or Driver side and Chassis No.
