How can i stop my vw passat dying at speed?

I have a VW Passat 1.8t auto, 2000 plate
While driving usually on level ground as i try to speed up the car starts to judder and slow down, i lift my foot up then try again and usually get power.
Hills dont normally have any problems.
Can be worring when as overtaking you slow down instead of speeding up.

Smells like a defective fuel pump - can supply adequate volume of fuel under normal driving but when gas pedal depressed carb injects a burst of fuel and engine has to wait for fuel flow to catch up - will splutter and lose power for a while until normal service is resumed. Take foot off gas and system fills up and regular power is restored until you pump the gas again...

Gentle acceleration = OK
Fierce acceleration = impossible
