How can I wire my master socket?

I want to fit a new master socket
Neil, October 2008
I had a problem with my in-laws BT phone. Eventually go through to BT who advised that in lieu of paying them £119 call-out plus £99 per hour or part therof, I could replace the master socket myself.

Their responsibility finishes once the cable enters the premises - so the advisor said.

This seem to be an area of confusion for us mortals.

The Old BT guy is quite right about fitting Master Socket. This the 'demarcation point' between you and BT and only BT should fit them. However if you have a modern NTE5 Master Socket is is perfectly permissible to fit a new faceplate, for ADSL (Broadband) for example.

However here is some clarification on connecting extensions: Connect the mainly Blue with White wire to 2 and the mainly White with Blue to 5. Connect NO OTHER wires. 4 has never been used. 3 hasn't been needed for donkeys years because modern phones do not need it and, as it can affect broadband, it should not be connected. (I guess that the Old BT guy has been away from this for a while.)

If you post a NEW question explaining what you are trying to achieve, I may be able to help further.

Ooooo should only be done by BT. However if you are swapping it for a fancy one to match your other sockets etc. There should be two wires coming in from the street, they go to A and B inside the master socket. All your extension sockets are connected to 2, 3, 4, and 5 from then on ie. 2 - 2, 3 - 3 etc. Ignore 1 and 6 as they are for telex machines.
