The usual way to get sprockets off is to use a thing called a piston stop. Remove the plug and screw in the piston stop. As the name suggests this jams the piston so that the crank is also jammed. The sprocket is then unscrewed - there's usually an arrow showing which way to unscrew it. You may have to tap to start, but don't use excessive force.
