ive got 2 pug diesels , that dont sound good white smoke is unburned fuel ,first change the air filter and the fuel filter there could be water in the fuel wich has got into the system this can screw up the pump and injecters and cost a lot unless you are friendley with a good fitter you could try a fuel adative after changing the filters the cost is small to that of repairs and may help , as diesels are simple beasts the only other thing i can think of is poor engin compresion (worn engin) you could point a fitter to checking the engin timing as through expereance the crank shaft sprocket keyway can fail 4 no reason giving the impresion the timing is out giving white smoke
