i have been using my memory card for the last few years, and it has all my work stored on it. recently i tried to open it and the computer toldme it needed formated. i tried with severeal other computers and it always comes up the same, have not formated because i don't want to lose the info on it.

Sounds like its probably corrupted.
This is where backups really come in handy.

There are some good repair tools out there that could sort it out for you.
Just Google memory repair tool.
