Snapper engine rev'd up high and died, now won't start?

The engine rev'd up real high and died out. Now we can't get it started. I changed the spark plug. Drained the gas and put fresh gas. When I try to pull start it, the engine doesn't sound like it is doing anything. It is only 3 years old. It is a snapper 11hp with a briggs & straton motor. Any help would be appreciated.

Rick,

The engine was blown. I had a mechanic look at it and I ended up replacing the engine. I found out later that the particular engine I had (briggs and straton 10hp) is poorly designed. The dealership in my area sells a lot of engines to replace the 10hp. There was no compression, which was the reason I called a mechanic. I replaced the engine with a 12hp engine, which is supposed to be a great engine. Thanks for replying.

Just how high did it rev? If it went too far past 3600RPM it may have blown it's self up. Does the engine still have compression? Take the spark plug out and hold your thumb over the hole and turn the engine. If there is no pressure there
it may have broken a rod, or thrown a valve. STAY CLEAR of the spark plug wire when checking for compression or you will get a good jolt!
