how can one fix a heater which will only work on fast speed

I think the fault lies with the switch on the dash. Try replacing that first. I had the same problem but I never bothered trying to resolve it but thats the first thing I would try. As an elecrician (not automotive) I appreciate that switches eventually give up like all things ! Hope that helps.
