my 1998 mondeo 2.0 ghia automatic will not shift in to second ,overdrive light flashes , will stay in 1st untill rpm reaches 3 to 4thou then goes in 3rd ,will not kick down ,manual shift down to second and it will be in neutral , manual shift from 1st to 2nd and it will be in neutral.

I have the exact same car and has just started doing the same thing- first time when i was suppose to do a long trip! great :-S
Was told to do the plugs...but that hasnt helped.
Its rough as guts going up into 2nd gear but not when it is changing down. Slight jault going from 2nd-3rd but not as bad. Overdrive light is flashing aswell :-(

Hi the problem here is a broken intermediate brake band you should find that 4th gear is affected too.Can be repaired in situ no problem.Might be worth checking servo first (located on bottom of transmission). another problem which can cause this problem is a faulty speedo transducer.Good luck.
