clutch pedal not returning, diesel 4x4 pick up?

i have a ford ranger, the changing of the gears was becoming difficult until i could not get it in gear at all and the clutch pedal was very soft, but now when pedal is pressed down it is so soft that it stays down. any ideas as to what may be wrong.

Had this with a Mitsubishi Shogun. A hydraulic clutch, the fluid had not been changed all its life. Did a fluid change in the normal way and bled all the air out of it at the same time of course. Pedal back to normal and as good as new.
Manufacturers recommend brake fluid changes every 2 years but people tend to forget about the poor old clutch fluid which is hygroscopic too.

Do you know if its a cable operated clutch or a hydraulic type? If its cable then the cable itself could be sticking/damaged or frayed, if its a hydraulic type then the master cylinder (the bit the pedal is connected to) could be faulty!
