My Moffat hob sparks without gas on?

My Moffat 3500 gas hob ignition sparks without the gas being turned on. Why?

I don't know if this works, but I'm trying to fix the same problem on my mum's cooker over the telephone(!) and a kindly engineer has said usually this stops if you switch it off at the mains and then switch it back on again!
