We were told that a rubbing sound on the wheels was a problem with our wheel bearings, when we took it to a reputable garage they showed us a problem with the wear on the tyres. The tyre company said they had seen this before with Zafiras & Vectras. Has anyone heard of this?

Interesting that this problem on Vauxhalls has not gone away . I have a 2015 Meriva and its happening on my rear tyres also. Looks like a castle pattern but only on the inner rear edges. The noise produced is like a wheel bearing whine. The tyres are original Michelin's and have very little other tread depth wear so very reluctant to throw them away.

After two garages thought the noise from the rear of my Signum was the early stages of bearing wear I was told to continue driving until the wear was so evident that they could identify which bearing it was. After a few thousand miles more, the noise was excessive and took it to a third garage who found that the tread blocks were wearing unevenly on the inside edge of both rear tyres. Mechanic thought it a tyre fault, tyre supplier said it was not uncommon for the car to show this tread block wear. Also happens to some Seat models he reckons. My tyres show one tread block normal wear one deeper wear, sometimes one block normal two block deeper wear. So check inside edge of rear tyres for this uneven wear pattern.

You could not see it, but if you felt the inside of the tyres you could feel the ' bumps'. When we took it to National Tyres, they said they were worn on the inside. The tyres that was a problem was Avon.

Never heard of that mate! However i have noticed on mine (zafira)that the fronts tend to wear out real quick due to it being top heavy on the corners!!!!! hmm sounds iffy, but hard to answer from your description was the wear on yours? what did it look like?
