how to connect a second laptop?

i have a laptop in my living room connected with virgin it is with a modem so i am buying my daughter a laptop for xmas she will have it in her bedroom how will that work will it pick up the signal from the one downstairs or do i need a modem upstairs aswell.or do i go and buy a wireless router

If you have Virgin Cable Broadband and you only have a cable modem? then you need to buy a router like this www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WGR614UK-Wireless-Cable-Router/dp/B0000C1WO2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226072576&sr=1-1. (Amazon are often the cheapest for this stuff.)

DO NOT BUY a router with built-in ADSL modem, IT WILL NOT WORK. You need a so-called Cable Router.

You plug the router into the modem (instead of your PC) now connect the PC to the router (instead of the modem).

When you get the laptop, it will be able to connect with its built-in Wireless Adapter. You won't know how well (or badly) the Wireless will perform until you try it.
