I have discovered that a small section of telephone wire has been badly damaged by a carpet gripper at a doorway. Is there a way to replace the damaged section without having to rip out and replace the whole length - which is laid over some distance and is concealed behind fitted kitchen units?

Yes. Get a junction box and connect the colours togther in it. e.g. Blue & White to Blue & White, etc.
