Ford Mondeo 1998 1.8 over revving at 60mph?

My Father's automatic mondeo has a fault when the car reaches 60 mph or so, the revs suddenly go higher and then it jerks. Any idea?

Thanks for this, all sounds about right except Father not aware of the flashing light. If it needs a rebuid, and this would be by Fords, is it worth it? Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Hi sounds like the gearbox is slipping.
Does the O/D light start flashing on the dashboard at all?
When the revs suddenly go up does it lose drive?
Im guessing it does and then jerks when it picks up drive again as it slows down again?
If this is all right i would say that the band has broken,a very common problem on the cd4e gearbox which is fitted to that year of mondeo.
The best option would be a full rebuild as the band snaps due to the valvebody being worn out and applying the band with excess oil pressure.
If you need any more info feel free to e-mail me.
