do the cam belts bend valves?

i there my fiat punto 1.2 60 s 8 valve 1997 was in the garage started it up and the cam belt snapped will it have bent any valves please let me know

Hi Sonia, your in luck your engine is known as a "freewheeling" engine that means in the event of cambelt failure valve to piston contact (damage) is unlikely but a compression test should be carried out to rule out any damage
