Peugeot 106 wont start properly keeps jumping engine makes funny sounds?

hi, i have a p reg 106 (1997) petrol. this problem does not occure everytime i start the car, but i can not work out what causes it to happpen. ok... when i start the car it takes a while of turning the key to get the engine to start and when it does start it promptley cuts out. After doing this a couple more times i am able to drive the car although i have to rev it a lot to stop it cutting out again.

as i drive the problem gets less severe until after about 6 miles it returns to normal. however, before this accelleration is reduced, the car jumps as if it is going to stall unless i put in a low gear and the engine makes a popping sound after about 2 miles of driving.

i have checked the air intake although not the air filter, all else i can think is it is my feul pumps or tubes or water somewhere in the engine. as the car gets better as i drive it. this problem does not occur everytime i start the car so i cannot work out the cause but it is getting more regular.

thanks for your help!
