wandering escort, still doing it?

thanks guys, for the advice. ive now done the o/s wishbone. still the same. wheels do look out of line.but... on full right lock, the n/s wheel is jammed against the inner wheel arch ! [would turn sideways, if it could]the o/s is ok. looks like the steering rack is u/s ! its a money pit. !

Have you checked how much thread is exposed on each trackrod where the track rod ends screw on?

The steering MUST be centralised to work properly. There should be an equal amount of thread showing on each side. If one track rod end is screwed on more than the other (give or take one or two threads) then the steering angles will be seriously cocked up.

Clean up the threads and then count or measure between the track rod end locknut and the start of the thread. If they are more than slighty out then you need to adjust them to get both sides equal. I would advise having a look at an Escort you know to be good and setting your threads to the same. Once you've done that you will need to have the car's tracking checked/adjusted.

If you are stuck I will measure the threads on my own Escort for you. Just let me know.

hi, stuart. fitted both wishbones, complete, with bottom ball joints.& n/s track rod end. gonna do o/s track rod tomorrow. i still think steering rack is to blame ? there is a lot of turns on steering wheel. & it over steers very easy. hit a manhole cover, & it jumps sideways !

normally on mk5 and 6 escorts is a worn ball joint, i had one very bad that used to steer itself if you went over 50mph !!
With the wheel catching on one side that will be the track rod end, get the wheels laser tracked, if it needs new track rods because they wont adjust they are £6 each from for example motorist discount centre
