Problem resolved.
After much thought and undecision as to what could be the cause, I got an engineer to call and have a look.
To my surprise it turned out to be a defective gas valve, causing low gas pressure to the burners. A consiquence of which was that the control panel had also suffered damage. Total bill, 422pounds. Life!!!
