how can i test a tumbledryer motor?

tumble dryer makes low humming noise the motor wont spin and is accompanied with a burning smell

On you dryer there is a small thing on or by the motor that is silver and looks a bit like a battery this is a capacitor that is probably gone but be careful as they store electricity it is probably dead but just in case with the unit unplugged use an insulated screwdriver and short the terminals on this before you touch it, if you have been trying to use the dryer for a long period of time with this gone you might have ruined the motor but you normally get away with it so change this and it should be ok, they are only cheap.
