why wont my car go in gear?

I can crank my car, but it wont go into gear. Can u please tell me why i can't shift into drive or any other gear? I have a 2000 s40 volvo auto

check the brake light switch is ok as this is used to tell the box the brakes are on and it is ok to shift into gear
