I may have lost a gold chain in the washing machine but I am unable to find a trap of any kind. The instruction book doesn't help. The machine is tightly fitted under a work surface and I don't want to pull it out unless there is a good chance of some sort of trap being located at the back. Can anyone help. The machine is also giving off a damp smell which makes me think that maybe other things may be lodged somewhere.

To locate trap on your machine you must remove it and on the lower part of the back plate there are about 8 or so screws once plate is off you will see a 2" thick pipe from pump to tub with a sump, remove this with the aid of some water pump or five holes pliers hopefully your chain should be in here.
