How do I change a size 10 pair of trousers into a size 8?

I have been asked to take in a pair of trouser waist band. At first I thought it would be easy, but sadly I found it impossible and now have ruined the trousers!

Is there a way to do this without it looking strange?

I would so appreciate some help on this.
