hot do i know that my dryer needs a new heating element?

my dryer drum turns just fine but won't get hot...it went from hot o cool in the last few days could that be the elment needing to be replaced and can I do it?

If the heating element has overheated it will have tripped the thermostat,so somewhere on the back will be a reset button,look if it has popped out,reset it and try the dryer,if still no heat affraid the heating element needs replacing.
