Like most things, it's a matter of technique, not brute force. Pull rope gently till resistance is felt. Allow rope to return, then take up the slack. Pull sharply. Engine should start 1st or 2nd attempt. My 9-year-old has no trouble at all starting his.
An electrc start version would obviously have been better, but also more expensive.
