Ford escort 1.8 diesel fuel problem?

Hi everyone can you help?, i have a 1998 ford escort 1.8 diesel van, does anyone know what keeps the fuel pressure in the system as each morning the engine turns over loads before it will start, checked today theres no fuel upto the pump, filter or even the main pipe from the tank.
Would appreciate any help or solution to this problem

HAving the same problem with my 2001 1.8 non turbo. Ran lumpy, so switched off and started again. Fine. Would not start next day, unless pump primed. OK, but if parked on slight incline, will not start even after an hour. Replaced primimg pump and on the button, but still air im#n system when driving, i.e. fluffy idle at times and feels like it is going to take off occasionally when driving. Left running for a bit, then wiggled injector hoses.... not in great shape at bottom and can hear pressure loss (sucking) on one injector when rubber hose moved. Will replace injector hoses and update. Otherwise a good van, 14 years old, 75K and been a dream for a decade.

Almost certainly you need to replace the combined filter holder/priming pump. This is a common fault on diesel escorts where the primer (the black button on top of the filter holder) leaks and allows air into the system causing the fuel to drain dack to the tank. You can usually pick one up for under £20 (look on ebay) and often they come with a new filter. DO NOT NOT NOT fit a second hand one - it may well be just as bad.

hi ive had this problem with my friends escort van and the problem was the rubber hoses between injectors had perished at there were no signs of fuel leakage at first but air was getting in and the fuel was draining back to the tank overnight changed hoses had no more problem

Mate im having a similar problem and i think its down to the Pump Primer. there is a diapram in there that goes, also air problems.
