on my bmw 316 2000 model on a x reg the yellow engine light is on?

on my 2000 x reg bmw i have a yellow engine light on my dash clock and it stays on do you no how to remove it as when i start the engine it does not go out could you tell me wat it is for and do i have a major problem with some thing or is this a simple job to correct many thanks

it needs topping up with oil.

this is your engine warning light,it comes on when you have a fault on your engine that needs sorting out straight away,it might only be a sensor but my advice would be to get it to a garage asap.Hope this helps
