Will metal shards from faulty fuel pump wreck injectors on car?

I have a Meriva 1.7 cdti which has stalling problem, have had diesel spill pipes replaced which seems to be a common fault. On inspection of tank and fuel filter housing metal shards were found. Was advised that if fuel pump was not replaced soon these shards could find there way into the injectors and wreck them. Can anyone confirm this please?

Theres a filter in the tank and the regulare fuel filter so they should catch all material coming thru but have seen alot of bad fuel pumps and its never effected the injectors ......

Obviously the fuel filter is there for a reason. Providing the fuel filter is between the contaminates & your injectors. I'd say you'd be OK. Change the fuel filter to be on the safe side.
