How can I fix the timing on my Bernina Artista 180?

When the needle comes down into the bobin case, it hits the metal of the hook. When I rotate the needle in reverse, it passes properly with the bobbin hook, but when I go in forward, the bobbin hook is past where it is supposed to be and it hits solid metal and of course, my needle snaps in half. I believe it is a timing issue, and there is no trouble shooting in my book to explain how I can fix it myself. Can I fix this myself, or do I have to take it to a repair shop?
