how can i get my engine to run up to temperature?

i have a ford mondeo 1800cc zetec the engine temperature stays on cold even after several miles. The only time it heats up is when i sit in traffic. Am i looking for a faulty switch or a thermastat?

if your heater is blowing out hot therses nothing wrong all temperature gages go up sitting in traffic

As stated above. You need to replace your coolant thermostat. Yours is stuck in the open position.
