What will happen if I run my Rover 214Si (1998 5dr hatch) without the expansion tank cap? I consider that the water will boil off after a time needing refilling whereas my mate reckons it could do damage to the cylinder head/block if run without the cap at all.
i recently changed my head gasket on my 214 si i did everything by the book but now it is like a miss fire when driving i have done the timing now 6 times so defo not that it is like it is firing on 3 cylinders it is always hesitating can you help me

Your mate is right because you'll lose your coolant quickly. It'll boil early because it is no longer under pressure.
